Our diet and consumption habits have a direct effect on our dental health. Caries (tooth decay) is the most widespread dental problem affecting over 90% of adults worldwide and the leading cause of tooth loss.
The most common negative dietary effects remain the high consumption of sugars which encourage a biochemical process by the bacteria in our mouth that demineralise tooth structure. With repeated demineralisation episodes, cavities (holes in teeth) result.
Both quantity of sugars and frequency of consumption increases the risk of dental decay, however current evidence suggests the frequency of consumption plays a more decisive role in increasing caries risk. Therefore if sugared beverages are to be consumed, it is preferable for it to be consumed during meals in one sitting rather than intermittently throughout the day.
The next most common negative dietary effect is acid exposure to teeth. Common culprits include fruit juices, wines and sodas. The acids result in dental erosion (the gradual loss of enamel on the surfaces) which have negative effects on function due to tooth wear, aesthetics and sensitivity.
It is advisable to reduce the frequency of consumption and limit it to during meals in one sitting and to rinse out thoroughly after consumption, waiting a minimum of 30 minutes before brushing to allow saliva PH neutralisation to occur.
For individuals with high frequency of sugar or acid beverage consumption such as athletes (sport drinks) or wine professionals, apart from rinsing with water after consumption and delaying brushing by at least 30minutes, dental products in the form of Tooth Mousse TM and RecaldentTM gum is highly encouraged (which promotes early repair of enamel damage).
