What is a sinus lift?

When replacing missing teeth in the upper back jaw, we sometimes face a unique challenge. This area often is in close proximity to the maxillary sinuses – the air-filled spaces located just above the roots of your back teeth.

A “sinus lift”, also known as sinus augmentation, is a common and highly successful procedure to make dental implants possible in this area.

Why it’s needed before upper jaw implants

The upper jaw bone is naturally thinner than the lower jaw. When you lose your upper back teeth (molars or premolars), two things can often happen:

  • Bone Loss
    Just like in other areas, the jawbone begins to shrink or resorb once a tooth is extracted or lost.
  • Sinus Pneumatisation
    The air-filled sinus cavity above the jaw bone can expand downwards over time, further reducing the amount of bone available.

The consequence is often a thin “floor” of bone separating the mouth from the sinus, and this bone is not strong enough to anchor a dental implant. A sinus lift procedure aims to rebuild this bone, creating the necessary height and stability for a successful dental implant.

The Process

A sinus lift is a specialised type of bone augmentation. This process often includes:

Accessing the area

First, your dentist makes a small incision in the gum tissue to access the bone.

Lifting the sinus membrane

Specialised instruments are used to expose the sinus, which is then carefully and gently “lifted” upwards from the thin “floor” of bone, creating more vertical space.

Placing the bone graft

Bone augmentation material (bone graft) is then packed into the space created underneath the “lifted” membrane.

Integration of the Bone Graft

The bone graft acts as a scaffold to encourage new bone to grow into the space. Over the next several months, your body will integrate this scaffold, growing new, strong bone and effectively increasing the height of your jaw floor.

Recovery expectations

Recovery from a sinus lift is generally straightforward and similar to other bone augmentation procedures.

  • You may experience some swelling or mild discomfort for a few days, which is usually manageable with painkillers.
  • You will be given specific post-operative instructions, such as avoiding blowing your nose forcefully or stifling a sneeze. This is crucial for protecting the new graft as it begins to heal.
  • The most important part of recovery is time. It typically takes 3 to 9 months for the bone graft to fully mature and become a solid part of your jaw.

Once the healing is complete, your dentist will confirm with a 3D scan that the new bone is ready to receive your dental implant.
